Kunsthalle Basel, established in 1872, is a prominent contemporary art gallery located in Basel, Switzerland. As the oldest and most active institution for contemporary art in Switzerland, it plays a significant role in Basel's cultural scene. The gallery is conveniently situated next to the city's theater and opposite the Stadtcasino, forming a central part of Basel's cultural center.

The Kunsthalle Basel was originally founded through the merger of the Basler Künstlergesellschaft (Basel Society of Artists) and the Basler Kunstverein (Basel Art Association). It has a rich history of hosting significant art exhibitions, including major solo shows by renowned artists such as Edvard Munch, Paul Gauguin, Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Vincent van Gogh, Piet Mondrian, Jackson Pollock, Alighiero Boetti, Joan Jonas, Jeff Koons, and Richard Serra, among others.

The Kunsthalle Basel is known for its dynamic, experimental, and rigorous approach to art. It organizes approximately eight exhibitions per year, often featuring international and Swiss artists. These exhibitions frequently take innovative forms and involve newly commissioned works. Besides the exhibitions, the Kunsthalle Basel offers a range of public programming, including artists’ talks, lectures, and readings, providing context for the artists' practices.

Architecturally, the Kunsthalle Basel was built between 1869 and 1872 based on a design by Johann Jakob Stehlin-Burckhardt, featuring contributions from several artists for its architectural adornment. Over the years, it has undergone multiple renovations to preserve its historical significance while updating its relevance in the contemporary art and architecture world.

Today, the museum also houses the library of the Basler Kunstverein, which contains around 30,000 items related to contemporary art, and a photo archive documenting the museum's history and past exhibits.

The Kunsthalle Basel is open from Tuesday to Friday from 11 am to 6 pm, on Thursdays from 11 am to 8:30 pm, and on weekends from 11 am to 5 pm. It's a must-visit destination for those interested in contemporary art and the evolution of artistic practices over time.
