Federico Luger is pleased to present “times2,” Franklin Evans’ second solo exhibition at the Gallery, opening on November 18th, 2010, 6.30 PM.
In this project, Evans moves forward with his research on time and repetition with an installation that, as in previous shows, will include painting, installation and drawing, and a diversity of materials. The show will feature pairs of works in which each part of the pair will force a consideration about the other. An example of this is the installation on the floor with press releases in the same fashion of the one included in “Greater New York” at MoMA P.S.1, (originofmcurrentmind). In “Times 2″, Evans plans to install a photographed version of originofmcurrentmind that will be divided in two. The first path will be the tattered press releases in their suspended state of decay, the second path will be the images from each press release isolated and increased in scale to match the size of the original press release. Both paths will be laminated and taped to the floor guiding the viewer into the installation and to the starting pair of watercolors, and each one provides a different kind of information: while the first group of images talks about text and its erosion; the second is about the image in isolation. At the same time, the watercolors pairs are similar, but while a group consists in blocks of colours, the other one is formed by texts.
The goal that Evans pursues with this installation is to invite the viewer to reflect on the conceptual possibilities of temporal expansion and contraction. Through the repetition of images, ideas, shapes, he attains a semantic suspension that allows to perceive how objects and concepts can emerge without a predetermined rate.
