Ecosystems by Federico Luger: SERIES

"Ecosystems" is a series of drawings - watercolours and ink on paper - started in 2004 by the Venezuelan artist Federico Luger under the pseudonym Ed Wood, an American film director, screenwriter, and producer, dubbed by several critics as "the worst director of all time." The artist takes an ironic approach towards this cinematic figure, aiming to induce thought-provoking reflections on art criticism. It's a challenge to conventional standards that define what constitutes good or bad art.

The drawings depict ecosystems in a precarious balance, elements of nature merging with animal life forms, still life, and quotidian scenes. All held together by an elegant, fragile yet resilient thread. It's a reflection on the complexity of interactions between living beings and the surrounding nature. The immediacy of the medium presents these ecosystems almost in the form of sketches.  A spontaneous gesture where each line becomes a declaration. 

 

Finally, through a deep perspective cut, the drawings acquire a three-dimensionality that suggests the idea of natural elements assembled in some kind of installation that never materialised.
